An Introduction to the RAD Syllabus

This foundational level introduces students to the core principles of Classical Ballet through a creative and imaginative approach. Young dancers will begin to learn the basic positions of the arms and feet, as well as simple jumps and traveling steps in a variety of formations.

Stretching exercises conducted with proper technique will help enhance flexibility in the hips, hamstrings, and back safely. Students will also explore mime, using facial expressions and movement to tell stories through dance.

Ballet training at this stage promotes muscular coordination, posture, and body awareness—encouraging children to move with poise, confidence, and grace.

  • Class Duration : 45 minutes

At the Primary level, students will take their very first RAD Ballet examination. The skills developed at this stage provide a strong foundation for a smooth progression into more advanced Ballet levels and other dance genres.

Students will build on their Ballet vocabulary by learning essential techniques such as Plié, Tendu, Sauté, weight transfer, and more. These foundational movements help reinforce proper posture, enhance coordination and body control, improve weight distribution, and develop spatial awareness. Students will also begin to refine their ability to observe and replicate movement, as they take on the challenge of performing a short solo dance — showcasing their technique, musicality, and expressive dance quality.

At this first level of the RAD Vocational Graded Examinations, training becomes more rigorous, with a heightened focus on the precision and detail of Classical Ballet technique.

Students are required to take 2 years of Intermediate Foundation.

    Intermediate Foundation - Year 1

Classes are conducted using a free-work approach, where teachers tailor exercises and combinations to target specific areas of improvement, beyond just the RAD syllabus. This method broadens students' Ballet vocabulary and exposes them to greater technical challenges, encouraging deeper growth.

Students will also be introduced to Pointe work, and begin learning basic dance anatomy and body conditioning exercises to enhance body awareness and reduce the risk of injury. To prepare for the free Enchaînement section of the Intermediate Foundation exam, students are expected to develop a working knowledge of French Ballet terminology—understanding both the definitions and correct execution of each term—fostering a more comprehensive understanding of Ballet as an art form.

    Intermediate Foundation – Year 2

The primary focus of Year 2 is to prepare students for the RAD Intermediate Foundation Examination. By this stage, students should have developed sufficient strength and control in their pointe work.

They are expected to demonstrate a broader Ballet vocabulary, including steps such as Glissé and Assemblé in devant, derrière, dessus, and dessous positions, as well as Balancé de côté, Batterie, and Posé en avant, en arrière, and de côté in a variety of placements.

This year serves to refine both their technical execution and performance quality in readiness for the exam.

  • Class Duration : 1 hour 30 minutes

    RAD Intermediate Level

Completion of this level is essential for students wishing to progress to higher RAD grades or pursue the CBTS (Certificate in Ballet Teaching Studies) course. At the Intermediate level, students are expected to demonstrate the ability to master more advanced dance combinations with greater technical complexity, refined dynamics, and musicality. This stage also fosters a disciplined learning mindset and a growing sense of artistic maturity.

Students will expand their Ballet vocabulary to include more advanced movements such as double en dehors and en dedans pirouettes, posé turns in series, chaînés, brisé, entrechat quatre, fouettés, and more.

To prepare for the free enchaînement section of the exam, students are required to understand and apply French Ballet terminology—both in theory and practice—deepening their overall comprehension of Classical Ballet.

  • Class Duration : 1 hour 30 minutes

Students are required to take 2 years of Advanced Foundation

RAD Advanced Foundation – Year 1

At the Advanced Foundation Year 1 level, students are expected to perform more technically demanding dance combinations with clarity and confidence, while demonstrating a solid understanding of musical interpretation through phrasing, rhythm, and dynamics in their movement.

They will be required to showcase a broader and more sophisticated Ballet vocabulary, as well as the ability to coordinate intricate movements with control, accuracy, and refined quality.

While emphasis remains on strengthening classical technique, this level also nurtures the development of artistry—encouraging students to explore expression, projection, and performance presence to bring depth and colour to their dancing.

RAD Advanced Foundation - Year 2

In Advanced Foundation Year 2, students are expected to demonstrate a wide range of Ballet vocabulary with precision, control, and dynamic quality—reflecting a deep understanding of technique and refinement in line and form.
